Welcome to the blog for Marginalia and the Early Modern Women Writer (1530-1660), an Australian Research Council-funded Future Fellowship project (FT180100371) led by Professor Rosalind Smith at the Australian National University. This four-year project investigates how early modern women readers engaged with the margins of their books, expanding our conception of what constituted early modern women’s reading, writing and book use in early modern England.
Please enjoy our recent discoveries in the margins, endpapers, and bindings of early books across multiple archives, including the Emmerson Collection at State Library Victoria, the Bodleian and British libraries, and the library of Merton College Oxford.
If you would like to contribute your own discoveries to this blog, especially marginalia that extends beyond signature and ‘her book’ to illustration, annotation, writing and evidence of book use in all its diverse forms, please get in touch with Julie.Robarts@anu.edu.au or Rosalind.Smith@anu.edu.au.
